Formed in 1928*, Boyd Watterson is one of Cleveland's oldest money management firms. The company specialized in offering fixed income and equity investment products to wealthy families and institutions. In 1979, Boyd Watterson became a wholly owned subsidiary of Duff & Phelps Investment Management Co., which was later acquired by Phoenix Investment Partners. On June 30, 2000, through a management and employee buyout, Boyd Watterson became one of the largest privately held asset management companies in Ohio.
In 2003, Mercantile Bankshares / PNC Financial Services acquired Boyd Watterson Asset Management, to complement its institutional fixed income product offering.
On October 16, 2007, Boyd Watterson was purchased from PNC by management and employees.
